REVIEW
I love the original 2006 film, who doesn't? It's a comfort food of a film with a great script and cast, with Meryl Streep in one of her most iconic roles. Twenty years later, a sequel has arrived and I'm happy to report that it's not a disappointment. Since the early to mid 2010s, legacy sequels have been one of Hollywood's hottest commodities- a trend that's brought us some great films that revitalize fandoms, and a trend that's brought us some real stinkers that stain the reputation of their predecessors. This film is a legacy sequel that does just about everything right. It brings us back into the worlds of these characters that we love, faces them with new conflicts and situations that develop them, and for the most part taps into the same essence that made people fall in love with the first film. In particular, this film does an excellent job at highlighting a believably necessary meaning for its existence as the plot delves into themes of modern day media consumption and the state of the media industry as of the 2020s. It's both thought provoking on a level of social relevance in the way the film bluntly conveys its messages and funny as a satire that leans into the humor of the changes that've occurred over the past twenty years. It's that balance of vitality and humor in the messaging that makes the rest of the film work as well as it does. This is a film that very much feels like it's taking place in the year 2026, and I say that positively. It's not without narrative elements that I wish would've been fleshed out more but all around the film's plot is strong- which allows the performances and characters to remain as lovable as they were two decades ago. It's a good sequel.
THREE BEST ELEMENTS
Anne Hathaway's performance. In only the span of two weeks I've put Anne Hathaway's performance as one of the "three best elements" of a film twice- in my review of "Mother Mary" and now for this film. The funny thing is that there's a strong chance it won't be the last time in 2026 that I do the same, as she has three films waiting to release later this year- Colleen Atwood adaptation "Verity", original blockbuster "The End of Oak Street", and Christopher Nolan's "The Odyssey" which has her positioned as an early contender for a possible second Oscar nomination. If any year is the year to recognize how great of an actress she is, it's 2026. She gives such a charming, lovable performance in this film.
The cast. Stanley Tucci, Emily Blunt, and of course Meryl Streep slip back into these characters effortlessly. They're great, who wouldn't expect them to be?
It's messaging. I spent much of the paragraph above highlighting why I loved the messages in this film, but it can't hurt to throw some more praise. They're clever and well written themes that make the film feel like it was fully worth being made.
WORST ELEMENT
It never quite reaches the highs of the first film, which is a more than common hurdle that sequels have battled for decades.
RATING
7/10
If you're a fan of the first you should definitely watch it, buddy!
