REVIEW
Well, this film turned out to be quite the welcome surprise. I thought it looked really cute and like a fun time at the movies, but I didn't originally anticipate for it to not only be just that but also be an emotionally moving and classically clever film. To best pitch this film to someone, I'd say its got the lovable wit of "Paddington" and the 90s esque all ages charm of "Babe"- all three films happen to star talking animals as well, that might have something to do with why they're being compared. As a murder mystery it's effective with a murderer reveal I didn't see coming, as a comedy it's very funny with clever gags & jokes throughout, and as a drama its themes are surprisingly touching in a way that I suspect all ages will be able to emotionally connect with. I didn't excpect going into this film that I'd be getting a little teary eyed here and there, but the film's messages on avoidance of grief/pain and acceptance of differences hit in a way done with such heartfelt intention as well as key meaning within the narrative that I couldn't help giving myself over to the emotional wavelength that the film effortlessly sets up. This film is able to balance its tonal strengths so well. I especially loved how much the script and cast lean into the playfulness of the film, never quite taking anything all that seriously but always playing it with efficiency and understanding of the type of film this wants to be. "The Sheep Detectives" is an utter delight that offers the type of originality and emotion that more family flicks oughta strive for.
THREE BEST ELEMENTS
The script. Written by Craig Mazin (Emmy winning creator of "Chernobyl", co-showrunner of "The Last of Us", and writer of "The Hangover Part II & III") this film's screenplay is sharp. Most all of the praises I gave the film in the paragraph above stem directly from how well written the script is.
The voice performances. With a large cast of celebrities, you might think that hearing pretty much nothing but famous voices coming from these sheep might be distracting but that's not the case. Julie Louis Dreyfus, Bryan Cranston, Chris O'Dowd, Brett Goldstein, etc. give dedicated performances.
The CGI/animation. Whenever a film features hyper realistic CGI animals in a prominent position, there's the often ignored risk of the creatures coming across as too hyper realistic or void of personality in their design. This film should be the new text book example of how to avoid that. The CGI/animation on these sheep is fantastic work, they're believable due to the amount of detail and feature the type of expressiveness that's cinematically required.
WORST ELEMENT
I wish that some of the human characters were fleshed out a little more, especially since most of them are fun characters and the cast does a really good job.
